Tooth Forms, Including Involute Tooth Form

Bob L. emails:  Hi,  I am considering your Toucan clock plans.  I have a little past experience in gear design, and am thinking of making the gears by a different method than scroll sawing.  Because of this, I wonder if you tell me:
1)  Do the gears in the Toucan have the common "involute" profile or are they a different profile??
2)  What diametral pitch are gears in the Toucan??

Aloha Bob, it is nice to hear from you and I'm glad you enjoyed viewing my site.  The Toucan is a wonderful, fun and easy to build clock.  It's my top design engendering the creativity and personalization of the various builders.  You can see many of their delightful "brain children" in the Flickr' pool of builder' pix (link on the Toucan order page).  Those pix really are worth viewing for some great ideas.

And how can I say that it is easy to build?  Because when you are looking through the Flickr' pool of builder's pix the first one is of a 13 year old boy that successfully built the Toucan.  Of course, maybe he's just a genius(?).

Gear design is a very popular topic and lots of time is spent on gear design in engineering books.  I write many pages in my book about gear design as it relates to wooden clock building, and I really do need to create a blog post about the topic.

First we have to ask ourselves what the purpose of the gears really is, and what is their real function?  

We could simply have two circles turning edge to edge and get the same ratio, but without the addendums and dedendums (the uppity and downity parts of the tooth) of spur gears our circle gears could easily slip.  Slippage would cause a deficiency of the transmission of the driving force through the system, but more than that, in a clock slipping wheels would also cause the hands to show the incorrect time and even cause a desynchronization of the relationship of the minute to hour hands.  

However, that does not mean we cannot use edge driven circles in our clock designs.  Take a look at my Horologium and you'll see that the hour wheel is actually a pulley run by the drive weight cord.  The gear ratio is maintained by the barrel diameters of the drive pulley and hour wheel.  http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/horologium.htm

So basically the "teeth" on a gear do two things for us; they efficiently transmit the driving force, and by doing so they prevent misalignment caused by slippage of the wheels.

When we are contemplating tooth forms for a particular mechanism, a couple other things that need consideration is the speed of transmission of the drive force, and the direction of that force through the gear train.  

In a clock the transmission of force is extremely slow.  In the normal grandfather clock the fastest wheel only turns one revolution per minute.  This slow transmission of forces allows for some very forgiving tooth forms.  There are medieval metal clocks that are still operational with simple triangular shaped tooth forms.  Some of the teeth in the very early wooden clocks were created with hand tools and look as though some teeth were hacked into shape.  These inefficiency of these irregularities and imperfections many times can easily be overcome with a bit more drive weight.  

It is only when we have gears rapidly moving together that we actually need the perfect involute gears with close tolerances that we've all learned about in physics class.  There are other very efficient ways of transmitting power through the system without the use of involute gears.  Take a look at my Vortex.  Vortex has straight sided teeth on all of its gears.  Straight sided gear teeth are about as far from the perfect involute curve as you can get.  Scroll down the page a little further and take a look at the side view and you'll see how I created the roller lantern pinions that perfectly match with the straight sided tooth forms of the wheels to give excellent power transmission and minimize contact friction. http://www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/vortexpage1.htm

And the last thing to consider is the direction of the forces transmitted through the gears.  Clocks run in only once direction.  Clocks do not ever run in reverse.  That means that the back side of the gear tooth never gets used and can be created in any form that the designer favors, as long as it does not interfere with the incoming tooth from the other gear.  Most of the time we simply make it a mirrored reflection of the front side of the tooth, but that mirroring is not necessary since that back side of the tooth is never used in a clock.

Most all of my tooth designs are of a modified involute design because even as forgiving as these wonderful mechanisms are one of the goals of a good design is to try and decrease the amount of driving force required.  Involute-like teeth help with that, but as we've discussed above involute tooth forms have no particular spiritual holiness sent from the God of Physics.  This gives us a tremendous latitude in design.  We can make our teeth straight sided, curved sided, or perfectly involute, but I have to chuckle because whatever tooth form we choose, we still don't need the back of it.

Toucan by Hans Neisz...in Lexan!

Hi Clayton,
I just finished the Toucan clock made from Lexan (Polycarbonate).
I used the escape wheel to add a second and adjusted the main dial to accommodate for the second hand.
Turned out pretty slick, particularly when light illuminates the lexan from different angles.

That looks SO EXcellent!  Beautifully done, Hans.  You really have a talent with Lexan.  I loved seeing right through the Toucan at all the moving parts.  

Usually I recommend against having acrylic wheels and acrylic pinions because of the increased internal friction, but on a clock like the Toucan where it is driven by the pendulum, you should have less, or no problems with that.

Another fellow with a laser wanted to make an acrylic Simplicity.  We worked together to create one that did not have any acrylic on acrylic contact, and it performs beatuifully (looks beautiful, too!).  Check it out by typing in "Ghost Of Time Clock" in the search at YouTube.

Clockmaker's Legacy Lives On

My name is Ethan Speir and I am a 23 year-old currently living in Leeds, Alabama. Over the past year, I have worked to complete my own Toucan Clock using your plans (see imaged attached). I used Black Walnut, Maple, Birch, and Katalox for my particular design. This was my first clock build and my first real woodworking project in general. I had a lot of fun and learned a great deal throughout the process!

I gave my Toucan to my parents for Christmas yesterday, and they were moved to tears. My mom's father, who has passed, was a clockmaker. I believe seeing his legacy live on through me and my newfound passion made the gift even more special for her. 

Thank you for sharing your beautiful work with the world. I look forward to building many more of your clocks in the future.

Clayton:  "Glorious, Paul! I always expect magnificence out of you, and you never fail. Your Toucan is an absolute beauty. With the use of an acrylic frame, the mechanism looks as though it is floating. That's a totally cool idea!

Thanks also for the heads-up on the bearings for the pendulum. As you know from reading my blog, I detest brass bushings because they increase internal friction. Unfortunately, I had to use one there at the pendulum to keep it tracking correctly. Your bearing idea is truly an improvement if you can decrease your voltage by 33%. Congrats.

Zach Woods (Age 13!) emails:  "Dear Dr. Boyer, I am pleased to send you these two pictures of the Toucan clock my I just completed with some occasional help from my dad. I am 13 years old and a middle school student in Wichita, Kansas.

I was really inspired by your wooden clock designs and felt I just had to make one or two of them. This one is for my dad's office (if my mom lets him take it out of the house!) and I'm also making a Simplicity design with my Grandpa. Me and my dad are plannning to build many more clocks, like Solaris for my mom and others for my dad's friends.

You did a wonderful job on your Toucan. I'm also glad to hear you let your dad help a little. I love hearing stories like yours where the family works together to build these wonderful projects. I live in my own Norman Rockwell world in my head, and hearing stories like yours brings me a lot of joy, and wonderful memories of building projects with my own son. Great times.

I hope that you and your grandfather enjoy building the Simplicity, too. You have chosen two very different mechanisms, so you are really getting a great education in wooden clock building, and I am sure your father and grandfather appreciate you letting them be a part of that joy.

I send you 2 vidéo : one about my new wooden clock, a TOUCAN a little bit modified to be symmetric and I add a seconds hands. The seconds gears is simply 3 identical gears with a little backside frame.
I wish you enjoy it. The design look like less at the animal calling "TOUCAN"!! But it'll be another clock different...

Tim writes: "Hi Clayton, I finally finished the Toucan. It was a very enjoyable project.   I enjoyed the experimentation (about a week) as we discussed about adding the second hand, it was just a little bit challenging to do some of the modifications that had to be done, but that is what makes this wonderful art of building wood gear clocks enjoyable, frustrating at times, but enjoyable, if that makes sense. Even though the second hand is not outside the hour and minute hand as conventional clocks, I think it turned out pretty good, and who's to say that what we do with wood gear clocks has to be the conventional way of clock designs and the way we build them anyway!! I have included a picture and a link of the clock in action. (Tim's YouTube video shown below:)


I commend you on your plans, very accurate and clear instructions. I got a chance to go thru your site, very informative, especially the blog, the information you give will be very helpful for some of your first time builders. I especially found it interesting about builders wanting to use bushings--glad you are advising them properly, I was a victim of the bushing monster myself at one time and you are dead on with this subject.

I will look forward to building another one of your clocks in the near future; I want to concentrate for a while on my Westminster project. Thanks for sharing Your Great Talent in clock designs and building techniques with the wood gear clock building world...it is very gracious of you.

Tim, that's spectacular! Your interpretation of the Toucan is absolutely wonderful. You are exactly why I ask for pictures. I love seeing the creativity of other woodworkers, and you not only did a great job of building the Toucan, but have actually improved upon the design with the addition of a seconds hand.

I basically consider myself a 'prototyper'. I'll get an idea that I want to play with, and I figure that if I want to play with it, others would like to play with it too. Most of the really good stuff in my designs actually comes from a collaborative effort with other wonderful builders like Jeff, Adrian, Forrest, John, Bob and Marc...and now YOU!

As you may know, it was Jeff, the electronics genius, that really made the Toucan idea happen, and the concept was proofed by Adrian, and Forrest who both made their own versions of this fun design, and showed that the design was possible to recreate.

I am very happy to hear you found my plans clear and easy to work from. Enjoyment and personal fulfillment is what this hobby is all about, and accurate plans help decrease the frustration level a lot. Thank you for your kind comments.

Your Toucan turned out beautifully, and congratulations on your brilliant addition of a seconds hand. I am impressed and elated by you creativity.

I find the escapement on both clocks fantastic and it is very difficult not to look at it.

My sister was looking on your site and she loved your Radiance clock so much that she asked me to order the plans and build it for her.

I started it at 2008 but I could not get it running so it disappeared in the closet

(with better tools and a bit more patience ;-)) its now running (still a bit to fast) nicely.

After the very frustrating experience with Radiance I build the Horologium which was very easy

to build and I get a little bit my self-confidence back. So I started to make Modern Times.

Again not so difficult to build and its running now a year without any problem.

But then you came with Attempt and I was sold.

It was a very nice job to build. The only thing that gave me a little headache was the adjustment of the rack.

And then came Toucan. What a fantastic design and being a electrician I have to build this.

Its running, because its electric, very accurate like a quartz clock. I love it!

Here is my return email to Ap:  "Aloha Ap, even with the wonderful design team I have for these mechanisms, I can't keep ahead of your construction! And what a beautiful job you did on all of your clocks, too.

That is one flashy Radiance. Yes, Radiance is probably the most frustrating of all my clock designs because there are so many fine adjustments that must be made to get it running correctly. BUT once she's running, she's an absolute dream to watch go through her gyrations. I can stand and watch her forever - trying to anticipate when she's going to pick up that lever and loose her single wheel.

Yes, the Horologium is a super easy clock, and the Modern Times is not much more work, but what a fantastic runner and so trouble free. I love the subtle colors of your Modern Times.

Man! Your Attempt Striking Clock is absolutely beautiful. You have an amazing eye for color combinations, and your Attempt is "striking" in more than the auditory way. What a beauty!

I didn't know you are an electrician, so that makes your approval even more satisfying. So glad you liked the Toucan design. I can't believe you created yours so quickly! She is a pretty fast build, but you really got yours completed amazingly fast. Yes, she's incredibly accurate, PLUS there never any winding!!!

I look forward to seeing your interpretaion of my Marble Strike. Your craftsmanship is outstanding, and your artistry with colors is truly breath taking. Beautiful job on all of your builds.
